Welcome to Rheld Farm
Richard and Kelly Bromwell welcome you to Rheld Farm, a working beef farm on the outskirts of Crickhowell. Formerly a dairy farm, Rheld Farm was originally known as Er Held — Welsh for “The Holding” — and its history dates back to the mid to late 1700s.
The Bromwell family’s farming roots in the area go back generations. Richard’s grandfather, John (Jack) Bromwell, was born in 1917 at a nearby farm, now the Sugar Loaf Vineyard. Even then, the family milked cows, delivering milk by horse and cart around Abergavenny.
In 1932, the Bromwell family moved to Rheld Farm as tenants of the Duke of Beaufort’s Dan y Parc Estate, continuing their milk round into Abergavenny. During World War II, the farm contributed to the war effort, with the two fields alongside the A40 — adjacent to the CL site — used as an airfield by the neighbouring Cwrt-yr-Gollen Army Camp.
After the war, Jack and his wife Mary were given the opportunity to purchase the farm in the early 1950s, securing its future for the family. In the late 1970s, Richard’s parents, Phillip and Gillian, took over the farm, with Richard joining them after leaving school. Today, our sons are the fifth generation of Bromwells to live and work at Rheld Farm.
In recent years, we’ve made significant changes to the way we farm. After careful consideration, we made the difficult decision to stop milking, with our milk collected for the final time in November 2025 — bringing 92 years of dairy farming to an end. During this transition, we had been steadily building our beef herd, allowing us to move confidently into beef farming. Our former dairy cows remain part of the farm and are now thriving as suckler cows, helping us grow our herd for the future.
